Make a practical pet evacuation plan

Plan the carrying, records and destination arrangements that a general household bag can miss.

01

Start with the animal you actually have

A plan for one calm dog will not automatically work for several cats, a large bird or an animal needing specialized care. List each animal, the equipment needed to move it and the person who can handle it safely. Ask your veterinarian about care-specific preparation rather than improvising treatment or medication changes. Large-animal transport and livestock plans require appropriate local expertise and facilities. Keep this worksheet focused on arrangements you have actually made, not a collection of supplies you hope to obtain during an evacuation.

02

Check the transport arrangement

Find the carriers, leashes or other appropriate restraint equipment and check that they are usable for the particular animal. Practice calm, humane familiarization before a stressful event; get professional help if handling creates a risk of injury. Work out how the animal and equipment fit with the household’s people, mobility aids and bags. A vehicle with enough floor space is not necessarily a safe transport setup. Never rely on an animal remaining loose and cooperative in an unfamiliar situation. Check the relevant transport and equipment instructions.

03

Confirm somewhere to go

Identify destinations that can accommodate the specific animal and verify their conditions. Do not assume every public shelter or hotel accepts every pet. Record normal contact details and an alternative outside the likely affected area. Availability can change during an emergency, so the list is a preparation tool rather than a reservation. Service-animal access involves separate rules and individual needs; do not treat it as interchangeable with a general pet policy. Ask the relevant organization about its current arrangements and keep the information with the household plan.

04

Prepare a small care record

Keep readable identification, recent photographs and the selected veterinary and ownership information that may help with care or reunification. Review identification and contact arrangements with your veterinarian and keep registration details current where applicable. Record the animal’s usual food, equipment and care routine in plain language. A trusted temporary caregiver should be able to understand the notes without guessing. Keep medications in their appropriate labeled packaging and follow professional storage instructions. This guide does not provide a treatment plan or authorize changing doses.

05

Build the handoff, not just the bag

Ask a trusted person whether they can help if you are away when an evacuation warning arrives. Confirm what they are comfortable handling and how they can obtain the prepared equipment safely. Do not ask them to enter an unsafe area or remain after an evacuation order. Write down the agreed contact sequence and backup person. Label supplies so a helper can distinguish animals with different needs. Keep human and animal hygiene supplies organized, and follow current public-health and veterinary guidance for shared shelter environments.

06

Review the whole journey

Walk through an ordinary practice sequence from locating the animal to reaching the planned transport. Notice the carrier blocked behind furniture, the missing leash or the contact sheet stored in another building. Correct the practical problem instead of adding more complexity. Review the plan when the animal grows, care needs change or a vehicle is replaced. Include pet supplies in the regular household review so items are not forgotten at the back of a cupboard. Keep a simple dated list of what is ready and what remains to be arranged.
