Prepare a vehicle departure kit that fits the trip

Connect the vehicle, passengers, documents and carried supplies in one practical departure plan.

Define the vehicle's role in your plan

Write down whether the vehicle is intended for ordinary transport to an agreed destination, carrying household equipment or another specific use. Do not treat a car as a universal shelter or a guarantee that travel will be possible. Identify who can drive it legally and safely and who can help if that person is unavailable. Keep current road restrictions and official evacuation directions above a preselected route. The kit should support a realistic journey, not encourage travel into a hazardous area because you have packed equipment for it.

Check passenger and equipment space together

Plan seats, appropriate restraints and the room needed for mobility aids, pet carriers and essential bags. Count actual passengers rather than assuming the vehicle's cargo capacity is all available for supplies. Keep the driver's view, controls and exits clear. Follow the vehicle and equipment instructions for safe loading; do not improvise a restraint arrangement for a heavy object. During a calm practice, load the selected items and check that each person can enter and leave as planned. Remove optional equipment when it crowds out a person, an essential aid or safe access.

Keep the vehicle's own requirements separate

Use the vehicle manufacturer's maintenance and operating instructions and obtain appropriate professional service. A household departure worksheet cannot establish that a vehicle is mechanically safe. Record upcoming maintenance, the location of relevant documentation and the ordinary roadside-assistance contact. Check the equipment appropriate to the vehicle and the driver's training without turning an unfamiliar tool into a promise of repair capability. Do not attempt a roadside task in an unsafe traffic position. Know the locally appropriate way to seek help and record that procedure with the vehicle information.

Pack for the people and conditions

Choose useful ordinary travel supplies around the passengers, expected journey and local conditions. Include the household's selected contact information and paper route folder, with suitable protection for private records. Consider lighting, appropriate clothing, water and familiar food that can be carried and stored under the relevant instructions. Do not leave heat-sensitive items in a vehicle merely because they are on a checklist. Keep necessary care supplies within their professional and manufacturer storage requirements. Review the kit seasonally and whenever a passenger's needs change rather than treating it as a permanently finished box.

Make the departure sequence understandable

Write a short sequence covering who checks people and pets, who takes the prepared bags and who confirms the intended destination when a safe communication method is available. Keep keys and authorized access arrangements clear without publishing security details on a public worksheet. If the plan depends on collecting someone elsewhere, confirm the relevant organization's procedures and what happens if roads are closed. Do not assign a driver simultaneous map-reading, phone or computer tasks. Use a passenger or stop safely when information needs attention. The departure plan should reduce distractions, not add a dashboard full of competing instructions.

Review the kit after real use

When an item is borrowed from the kit, record it and replace it through the household's normal process. After a practice journey, note what could not be found, what was awkward to reach and what did not fit. Keep a dated list of unresolved vehicle or equipment issues. Do not call the vehicle ready because the supply bag is complete while maintenance or passenger arrangements remain unconfirmed. Review route information and contact details separately from physical supplies. A useful kit is maintained as part of normal travel habits, not opened for the first time during an emergency.
